KRISTEN STEWART'S INTERVIEW WITH THE YORKSHIRE POST (UK) FOR 'THE RUNAWAYS.'

Saturday, September 11, 2010KRISTEN STEWART'S INTERVIEW WITH THE YORKSHIRE POST (UK) FOR 'THE RUNAWAYS.'

Interview - Kristen Stewart: The shy star stepping into Joan Jett's punky shoes

Yorkshire Post UK Kristen Stewart embraces characters like magnets attract iron filings. Her newest incarnation is as legendary rocker Joan Jett in The Runaways. She spoke to Tony Earnshaw.

She writes music. She likes movies by Stanley Kubrick and John Cassavetes. She yearns for a past she's never experienced. And she's just 20 years old.

"She", of course, is Kristen Stewart and, courtesy of the Twilight movies and heroine Bella Swan, she's arguably the hottest female star on the planet.

It's easy and too simplistic to cast Stewart as sullen, stand-offish and unsmiling. Perhaps the truth behind her oft-reported reluctance to conform to film star stereotypes is that she's fundamentally shy. Yet she has been thrust into a harsh spotlight that she neither anticipated nor welcomed. Not an easy arrangement for a global superstar.

Yet Stewart is not your average screen popsy. If she's rebellious, it's in a low-key manner. Yet she was the actress picked to play Joan Jett, the original American rock chick, in a new biopic of ground-breaking all-girl '70s' band The Runaways.

Undoubtedly, Stewart's box- office appeal has much to do with her casting. Yet there is something within this reserved young woman that is peculiarly retro in mood and feel.

"Meeting Joan for the first time, I was terrified, truly terrified," says Stewart. "If she didn't think that I was right for this, then I didn't think that I was right for it either. So the first meeting could have really gone either way. But I flew up to Washington to see her play and I spent, like, the entire night with her."

It was a New Year's Eve meeting to remember. Immediately afterwards Stewart began work on New Moon, the second film in the Twilight series. She forced herself to hold back, to not obsess over whether she had the-then 50-year-old Jett's vote of approval.

She realised she had the role "when she didn't kick me out of her hotel room," she laughs, adding "we just sort of instantly had a rapport".

Whilst the Twilight movies have handed Stewart an extraordinary celebrity, she is at pains to stress her ordinariness. She wishes to be seen as an actress first; the stardom is a mantle she is forced to wear.

"I watch a lot of '70s' movies," she says by way of explaining her affinity with the legendary rocker.

"I love all of Kubrick's movies. I love old independent movies like Cassavetes movies. Joan was watching funny stuff when she was younger. There's this tape of her when she's 14 so I could hear how she spoke, and it's so different. Now she's very New York and raspy, but back in the day she was light; she was a kid and she just talked about a movie that was funny."

Her relationship with Jett, who executive produced the film, has transcended its making. This odd couple – the awkward, gawky actress and the hard-boiled black-clad queen of proto-punk rock – swap stories about the parallels in their lives.

"She completely understands where I'm coming from. I mean, we're both fairly, unabashedly ourselves, so the advice sort of stops there, do you know what I mean? She says, 'Just be real, just say what you mean,' and there you go."

Notwithstanding the Twilight movies, Stewart's background has been in independent and arthouse pictures, or hybrids of the two. She was excellent as the lovelorn beatnik in Sean Penn's Into the Wild and embraced the opportunity to attack another tasty character in The Runaways.

She may not be entirely convincing but she gave it her best shot. She was fortunate that, as much as she was ostensibly the star attraction, she was also part of a tight ensemble that included Dakota Fanning as the band's vocalist, Cherie Currie.

"It's actually the first movie that I've ever done that wasn't an original, fictional piece of work," says Stewart.

"If we don't capture the essence of The Runaways, then it should be acknowledged. That's really important but it's scary – I now know Joan; I have a relationship with her. Everything would fall away if I thought that I wasn't respecting that."

She adds: "She was a very sensitive girl; the word 'punk' didn't even exist. Everything she wears is kind of light.

Sara Gruen comments on Water for Elephants

Finally, switching topics briefly, I understand that filming on Water for Elephants (with Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz) has just wrapped. Are you happy with the result?

Very happy. The studio consulted me more than they contractually obligated to do, and the screenwriter did a brilliant job in compressing the novel into a two-hour film by combining a few characters and incidents in ways I couldn’t have begun to.

Robert Pattinson & Kristen: Do they deserve Summer King and Queen crown?

Twilight heart throbs Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have been crowned the King and Queen of Summer 2010 in an online poll by E! Online
Now, if any doubt lingered on Robert’s popularity then it has been shred off with the poll results as Robert fetched a mammoth 68.7 % votes easily edging past the next man Robert Downey Jr. with his 31.3 %.
Kristen Stewart, on the other hand, harvested a decisive 61.6 % vote against Katy Perry’s 38.4%.
So, do Robert and Kristen deserve the title?

Stephenie Meyer Talks Volvos, Sequels with Renesmee, Leah and Edward’s Chivalry

Twilight Series Theories has a great transcription and audio clip of the part of the interview where Stephenie talks about her feelings on the Volvo color change in the movies, the characters she would most like to do sequels with and how she just enjoys writing – not to send out a message or make a point.

Fansite: If you were forced to write a sequel or some novella, which—what character or characters would you do?

SM: If I were to go ahead with sequels, and I think that I’ve already stated this in some book thing, I would tell it from two narrators again, although I think I’d switch back and forth and it would be Nessie and Leah. And you know it’s funny because a lot of people are like—I’ve read a lot of theories about why I felt compelled to have Bella have a baby and there’s only one reason and it’s not because—there isn’t a lot of really negative stuff—it’s not because you know Bella needed to have a baby or anything, it’s because I knew—it was really clear because I’d already done “Forever Dawn”—once Bella becomes a vampire she loses her relatability. But Nessie was created because she was the logical voice, you have someone who’s half-human, half-vampire who doesn’t fit in anywhere and is an outsider in some ways, but then loved and cherished by her family. But all the intricacies—she had so many problems, so many challenges so she was so attractive to me as a narrator. And then Leah, of course, obviously is left open, right? I can’t—I couldn’t solve all the problems in this because I didn’t want to end it. I mean clearly the Volturi, that wasn’t the end, end. I needed to get to an ending spot for now, but you know I…I just couldn’t see them, the Volturi—they’re smart, they’re patient, they’ve been doing this forever—they’re not going to get into this situation and not say, “Oh we need to reevaluate.” It didn’t make sense for me—them as characters to just go ahead with it, for me. But like, Nessie’s supposed to tell the story next and Leah has a story to tell too and so that’s where it would go.

You can listen to the interview and read the entire transcript at Twilight Series Theories here

What do you think of Stephenie’s ideas for sequels with Leah and Nessie? What do you think of her views on why Edward behaves the way he does?

John Isner Asked Kristen Out On A Date

When asked whether there’s a lady in his life, John proclaimed, to the delight of female fans everywhere, that he’s “very much on the market.” He went on, “I want someone easygoing, someone easy to talk to. I want to be able to sit on the couch and watch football with her.” We’re guessing that Georgia Bulldogs fans would move to the top of the list… But it was John’s agent, Sam Duvall, who spilled the real beans on John and the ladies. He recalled John’s post-Wimbledon Letterman appearance: “Kristin Stewart from Twilight was on the show, too. And John said to me, ‘Hey she’s kinda cute!’ So as she was leaving and shepherded quickly into her SUV, John sauntered up and tapped the tinted window. She lowered the pane and John craned down to stick his head in— and asked her out for dinner. Apparently she had a premiere, or so she said…”

Soo ...she had a premiere...huh!? LOL i can just imagine Kristen trying to say NO without blurting out.."IM TAKEN!" ;)

Heat Mag is a “Slave” to Lame Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart Stories

Heat magazine has a sterling track record when it comes to reporting on Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

After all, the tabloid once insisted that Stewart was living a miserable “nightmare” (not so much) and printed an “exclusive” photo of Pattinson sleeping on the Tube in London (oh, wait, that was faked).

Now Heat is exploring the pair’s relationship — and has concluded that Pattinson is more like Stewart’s “slave” than her boyfriend.
(shaking head)

After a gratuitous dig at Stewart, whom the mag describes as “famed for her below average acting abilities,” Heat claims the actress “treats her hunky beau like an assistant, often sending him out to buy booze and food.”

On cue, a so-called “source” provides this gem of a quote: “She’s like, ‘I love Rob, but I love my dogs, too.’”

Weirdly, some sites picking up the rumor try to connect it with the notion that Pattinson is “possessive” of Stewart. Somehow, by supposedly treating Pattinson like a “servant,” Stewart breaks his hold on her.

Here’s what seems more likely: Outlets are replacing their debunked claims that Pattinson is controlling with equally lame assertions that Stewart is controlling.

Maybe Heat should “master” the fine art of accurate reporting before (badly) playing amateur relationship counselor.

Article by @culturemap on Rob’s Night out in Houston

You’ve got to hand it to Robert Pattinson. The very mention of his name can inspire teen girls into twitchy, screaming raptures, but that’s no reason for R.Pattz to miss out on some fun with the boys.

And for the British Pattinson, this summer that includes embarking on the quintessential American experience — the road trip.

After recent stops in New Mexico, Lubbock, and Austin, a bearded, low-key Pattinson made his way to Houston Wednesday night, hanging out in downtown’s most venerable pocket of indie iconoclasts — notsuoH.

According to online reports (a.k.a. Twitter), Pattinson was hanging out and taking pictures with fans. When his friend, musician Sam Bradley, played an impromptu set, Robert joined in on guitar while sitting on a Dracula pinball machine.

One song in the set? An acoustic version of “No Diggity.” (It probably sounded something like this.)

Word is Pattinson’s next stop is New Orleans, where Kristen Stewart is filming On The Road.

Renesmee Cullen Turns 4! Present to her: Listing Nessie Aspects We're Excited To See In 'Breaking Dawn'

The past month has been chock-full of important dates for our favorite vampire family, the Cullens. First, was

Edward and Bella's wedding anniversary on August 13. Our calendar is already marked for September 13 when we'll be sure to wish a very happy birthday to Bella, but today is all about her half-vampire, half-human daughter, Miss Renesmee Cullen, who turns four years old—sorta.

Since Stephenie Meyer never quite explained the mathematics behind Renesmee's rapid aging, we'll guess that she's somewhere between the mental and physical capacities of a 10 to 14-year-old by now (remember, she'll reach full maturity by 7 years old, but forever look 17). We'd feel bad offering her a birthday present she's too old for or can't use yet, so instead, we decided to gift her with four aspects of her character we're most excited to see in both installments of "Breaking Dawn"!

What are you most excited to see of Renesmee in "Breaking Dawn"? Have you figured out how old she is actually supposed to be today?

Robert Pattinson’s Haircut in Modern Man’s “10 Haircuts Hot Women Love”

Robert Pattinson

This kind of guy can rock it: Artistic types, lazy guys, vampires.
This kind of guy can’t: Anyone who needs to look remotely professional.
The hair you’ll need: Wavy, thick hair will work best. Curly guys can try this as well.
How to style it: Here’s the thing about this look: While it seems like Pattinson rolled out of bed and onto the red carpet, he actually spent some time styling this. Try using a pomade or styling wax to mold your hair up into this messy shape.
Crucial bonus tip: You want to look like you were rolling around in bed all night, not smell like it. So don’t skip showering to try and make this more authentic.

Robert Pattinson, RoadTrippin’ Part 2 by @theawfultruth

Via

Our fave sexy boy Robert Pattinson is still truckin’ along! As we told you Tuesday, Rob’s been on a road trip with the boys, making stops in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
We were alerted to the most adorable fan encounter from when Pattinson apparently visited the Buddy Holly museum in Lubbock, Texas, (this was also during his pit stop at Crickets bar, where he was swarmed by female fans from a nearby college campus), and we have more good news: Looks like he’s still making his way east to Kristen Stewart!

First up, if you had a hard time believing R.Pattz was charming in his offbeat way, then checkout this Twilight fan’s story from the Buddy Holly museum.
If you’re one of those people who spend 24/7 on your computer, of course, you’ve seen this. But for those who just like cute stories and don’t religiously blog, here’s a brief rundown:

“I was rounding a corner with the stroller & there he was scruffy & all…I just spit out ‘rob is that you?’ he turned around…looked at me & started laughing & said ‘no no you’ve got the wrong guy’ but duh I heard his sweet voice I knew it was him…He kept smiling my 14 month old was babbling so Rob bent down a little & said ‘hi there’…Rob was soo nice & polite even tho he looked sleepy. He said he was going to head out & asked me nicely not to post anything about his whereabouts for a few hours…He gave my son’s hand a little tug & said ‘nice meeting you’, then he said the biggest compliment ever, ‘i hope when I have a kid he’s as beautiful as you! ( talking to my son)”
Adorable or adorable?

As for where Mr. Pattinson is now, let’s stay hush until he’s there, shall we? But it would appear as if New Orleans is his destination…a place where, totally coincidentally, Kristen Stewart is currently filming On the Road.

Pattinson was spotted drinking Tecate’s with his pals at Chupacabra Cantina in Austin, Texas, Tuesday afternoon. A source at the bar says that R.Pattz seemed like a “down-to-earth guy” and was very “polite.” That seems to be the general consensus!

How much would you pay to be a fly on the wall during this all-boys car trip with Rob and his besties? Well, that won’t happen, but you can bid on a set visit to Breaking Dawn with all proceeds going to Stand Up to Cancer!

NEW Interview: Kristen Stewart-Marie Claire Australia October 2010

Like the moody Bella Swan, her Twilight alter ego, Kristen Stewart prefers the shadows to the limelight.

When your first screen credit rolls up after the names Glenn Close and Joshua Jackson, fame is going to be difficult to avoid - even when you're 11. Kristen Stewart has had nine years to get used to it, but the Twilight star still craves celebrity like a vampire seeks out sunshine. "I grew up in the business, so the attention isn't surprising, but it is inhibiting," says Stewart, who landed a role in 2001's The Safety Of Objects after an agent spotted her in a primary school play. "I love acting and I'm so grateful for Twilight and the opportunities it's given me. I'm just not very good at dealing with the idea of being followed everywhere, and not being able to walk down the street or sit at a cafe with friends without getting mobbed and Twittered."

And don’t start her on the romance issue. The latest instalment of the Twilight saga, Eclipse, only ramped up the hysteria surrounding her apparent relationship with co-star Robert Pattinson. "Nothing I could say would change anything, so I'm not going to say anything," sighs the ethereally beautiful Stewart, whose brittle manner suggests that a hotel suite remains her true sanctuary. A role reversal doesn't hurt, either. And what better therapy for an angsty ingenue than a role as seminal rock chick Joan Jett in this year's biopic The Runaways. As Eclipse and the critically acclaimed The Runaways are released on DVD, Stewart opens up about life in the Twilight zone and how she is managing to balance life, career and her conflicted bargain with the devil of celebrity.

Do you sometimes feel exhausted by the attention you've had to deal with?

It's hard to talk about that without giving the impression that I'm being negative or complaining. I love acting – I'm so passionate about the process, but there's a helpless feeling when you can't do the things you used to be able to do without attracting a large crowd. I knew the business very well before I had the chance to be a part of these films and so it's not like it's a shock to me. I would just rather not have to worry about where I can go just so that I'm not going to be followed. Sometimes I stay in my hotel room when I'm working on films or while I’m doing publicity for them. It's less aggravation.

Is it important to you to have the chance to work on other films in between the Twilight movies?

I love to work. I don't have any master plan as far as my career is concerned. I just choose projects on instinct. It was so interesting for me to be able to do The Runaways and play such a fierce personality, and the other films I've done have all had something that was really meaningful to me. I try to find roles that connect with me rather than think about how big the film will be or what it will do for my career. I could never structure things that way.

What is your take on Eclipse?

We see a more confident and determined Bella. She's evolving and learning more about who she is and what she wants out of life. She also has to deal with the possibility that she's lying to herself about being in love with Jacob when she is still, in fact, deeply in love with Edward.

Is it a case of Bella overcoming a lot of her self-doubts?

Bella is surer of herself and not as moody and despairing as she was in New Moon. It's a really interesting progression that we see in Eclipse. It was interesting for me to take the character into a different space. I enjoy being able to leave one film and one chapter in her life and then get to explore her again. Most films force you to leave your character and that's the end of the journey. So with Bella it's exciting to be able to revisit her and rediscover new elements to her character.

Do you think Eclipse is a classic love triangle situation?

It is in the sense that Edward and Jacob are both fighting for Bella. She thinks she knows what she wants, but now she has to be able to stand up and say, OK, so maybe every choice isn't completely impulsive. Maybe there are different levels of love, and maybe my ideological views of what I think you are to me are wrong, and maybe I could look at somebody else.

Do you feel you understand better now why the public is so fascinated with the Twilight story?

I think you have these intense personal dramas and the kind of deep feelings that Bella is experiencing, and everything that is going on between Bella and Edward and Bella and Jacob, that these very intense and private stories are developing where there's all this chaos and danger surrounding them. So you're thrown into a world that most people can relate to on a personal level, and then there's this incredibly exotic and threatening backdrop to that world.

You have to do your fair share of red carpet appearances and awards shows. Do you feel pressure to look your best and find great outfits to wear?

I like to dress simply, but you always like to look good or wear something that makes you feel good. I don't know that much about fashion and I don't think I have very sophisticated tastes. I'm not that comfortable being photographed in general, so most of the fashion shoots I've done have been kind of awkward, although I guess I'm learning each time.

Some of your directors have said you have a very good bullshit detector...
I don't like to create any false image about myself or try to pretend to be someone I'm not. I guess I can be too serious sometimes and get too intense and involved when I'm working, but that's [my] nature.

Are you still as intense as ever when you're working on a film?

I like to throw myself into the character and feel that I'm giving everything I possibly can to the performance. I feel I need to bring that intensity and commitment to each film and it's my responsibility to the audience to give everything to the part. Sometimes that can be hard on you and you feel exhausted and a little empty after each film. You've also been a part of this particular world; the other actors; the crew; whichever city you happen to have been shooting in. You then have to leave that setting and go back to your own life, and that's not always an easy process.

Is that why you sometimes seem nervous in public or on TV talk shows?

I'm not the kind of person who wants or likes to be the centre of attention under any circumstances. I love the fact that fans are so appreciative and have such a great love for Twilight; I feel privileged to be a part of this, but it can be intimidating. I don't have that interesting a life apart from my work, so when I'm discussing things about myself I feel strange. I wind up looking either really stressed or nervous or too laid-back – when the truth is that I don't want to come off seeming overly serious about my work or complaining about all the attention that comes with the job.

What about awards shows?

(Grimaces) I've had some pretty bad experiences. I've even dropped an award and watched it break into a million pieces. I'm kind of clumsy and so as long as I don't trip, I feel I've pulled it off. I should try to relax more.. I don't know.

When you worked on The Runaways, where you played singer Joan Jett, what was your take on the sexual aura she cast?

There was a sexual revolution going on when she was coming up in the music world, and it is still having an effect on us now with people feeling much more comfortable at a young age doing stuff like that. But these girls, they were the first ones to rebel. Like, it wasn't normal for girls to be sexually aggressive in any way.

How do you approach choosing scripts and then the character you’re playing?

A number of things draw you to a script. It's not just like wanting to live out this experience; sometimes it is thematic. But that's not your job; people you're working with can keep that together, and you need to make sure you do everything you can to do your part. But in terms of intellectualising acting, you have to do it a little bit, but I feel way more than I think, and I think that's good for an actor.

You're 20 now. What's your take on everything that's happened to you?

I've been very lucky. I love being in the position now where I’m going to be able to do more and more good films and just keep working at something I love so much. I don't really know how to do anything else. I just wish maybe photographers would stop chasing me.

Adam Brody Says His Kristen Stewart Comments Were 'Ungentlemanly'

'I sounded like a jackass,' 'The Romantics' actor says of telling KStew to 'quit' the acting business.

It was the comment that launched a thousand hate emails and lit up "Twilight" message boards across the World Wide Webs. Previously adored, charming guy-next-door actor Adam Brody backhandedly told Kristen Stewart to "quit" acting if being famous bothered her so much.

The firestorm was sparked by an interview Brody gave on Diablo Cody's online chat show, "Red Band Trailer." When Cody asked Brody whether he enjoyed his celebrity or if he would prefer to be known as just "an actor," referencing Stewart's comments about wanting to be left alone, his response was a bit testy.
"It's only gotten worse, I'm sure, being a celebrity," Brody, who was recently added to the "Scream 4" cast, said. "At the same time, I don't have a lot of patience for people who moan about it too much. Because there are many things you could do. ... It's like, quit ... you don't need to be an actor, so it's like, if it's that much of a problem ... there's the door."
And with that, the hate-on-Adam-Brody campaign began. When MTV News caught up with the man in question to talk about his upcoming ensemble flick, "The Romantics," we asked him whether his response might have been taken out of context.

"Aye, no, I just, I, this is horrible," he started, seemingly uncomfortable addressing the hot-button issue. "It wasn't taken out of context. I saw [the episode] and thought I sounded like an idiot. I did," Brody admitted. "Regardless of how anyone else took anything, I would think that sounds very ungentlemanly and I sounded like a jackass."
A Hollywood actor who publicly acknowledges a gaffe? Well, done, Mr. Brody. Points to the former "O.C." star for his honesty!
What do you think of Adam's latest response to the KStew flap? Tell us in the comments!

Kristen Stewart: I 'Had To' Do 'Twilight'

Kristen Stewart reveals that she didn't really have much of a choice when it came to playing the iconic Bella Swan in Twilight.
The 20-year-old actress told Stylist magazine that while she didn't have a big career plan set in her mind when she accepted the major role of Bella, she did feel compelled to sign on for the vampire flick:

It's hard to define exactly why I choose projects, and it's not like I had this brilliant foresight that Twilight would be big. I can only do something I feel like I have to. There's not really a whole lot of choice, but at the same time, I don't have some grand scheme.

Meanwhile, KStew tells the magazine that she also feels compelled to be an actress because she has a lot of "pent-up energy:"

It would be very frustrating [to not be an actress]. I'm not good at anything else. I'm bad with my hands. I can't make stuff. Acting is so self-indulgent and self-reflective and we just think about people and how they deal with one another. That's probably what I'd continue to do! I'd be the over-analytical girl who writes.

Maybe Kristen's feeling of kinship with writers has to do with why she took up a role in On the Road, which is based on Jack Kerouac's beat novel.

EONLINE! - Would you do this shirtless Edward?

Is it too early in the morning to say we're ready to do body shots off Matt Lanter's abs?

The 90210 stud was on Robertson Boulevard in West Hollywood yesterday filming...uh, who knows. Who cares, he was friggin' shirtless!
Matt, who most recently hit the big screen in Vampires Suck as Edward, makes us wonder: Do his abs do it for you more than Robert Pattinson's?

We knew Lanter was super deelish, and the fact that he's witty as hell and can go up against Twi-hards only made him that much sexier in our bitchy book, but we'd kinda overlooked that deelish bod.

True, we didn't see Vampires Suck, but in the previews, he was so pale we couldn't see that ridic 20-pack, so maybe pegging him against Taylor Lautner is a better bet. (We like Rob just the way he is).
Lanter literally stopped traffic yesterday afternoon as he filmed outside Reiss all shirtless and such. Hell, we even got touristy and stopped to see what the fuss was about. When we realized it was his abs, we stood and gawked for about five minutes.

So, does this guy do it for ya over a real vampire or werewolf? Chime in below.

Kristen about Rob:

'No, he's my Edward.' ~ when asked if she wished to recast Edward Cullen.

'He’s intelligent, he’s modest, and - whatever anything else people say about our relationship -he’s my best friend.'

'In my case when I looked at Robert it was like I could look into his heart, and he could do the same'

"He's a good actor and has a really insane work ethic. He is really sensitive. He's perfect. He's my perfect Edward."

He was the only guy that came in for the auditions that I wasn't fabricating this emotion with. It was all very real."

I call him Flippy because when he does his stunt rehearsals, he flips around. And, God, when he tries to run ..."

"Rob's more of a thoughtful, analytical, wishy-washy intellectual."

Robert about Kristen :

"Kristen was very different from how I expected the girl who played Bella would be. I was kind of intimidated."

'Kristen and I Have a special bond together, she is the sweetest, smartest and strongest girl i know.'
