'The Runaways' DVD - Last Week's Sales & Rental Chart Rankings

A third new release, the docudrama "The Runaways," about the all-girl rock band created by rock impresario Kim Fowley, debuted at No. 4 on the sales chart, behind "The Bounty Hunter," the previous week's top seller. Despite a cast that includes Kristen Stewart of "Twilight" fame, "The Runaways" grossed less than $4 million in theaters.




"The Losers" debuted at No. 3 on the rental chart, behind "Bounty Hunter," while "The Runaways," from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, bowed at No. 10.


On Nielsen VideoScan's dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, "The Losers" narrowly edged out "Cop Out" for the top spot, while "The Runaways" debuted at No. 6. According to Nielsen numbers, 51% of unit sales for "The Loser" were on Blu-ray Disc, compared with just 38% for "Cop Out" and 17% for "The Runaways."

What parents need to know about THE RUNAWAYS!

I found this here while looking for reviews on the movie, i know it's serious because  Twilight has younger fans too, and it's a cool way to warn the parents that it's not the same thing as Twilight. But, i did think it was pretty funny.

Parents need to know that this music biopic is way too mature for Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning's young teen Twilight fans.It's full of drinking, drugging, and high-heeled swaggering, as well asplenty of sexy stuff, including kissing between teen girls and sexscenes between teen girls and young men. Substances are mostly limitedto alcohol, but teens also snort cocaine. Parents should be preparedfor teens to fantasize about running off and starting a band after seeing thismovie.


•Families can talk about the teens using drugs and alcoholin the movie. Why do you think there's such a link between drugs androck-n-roll? Did the up-and-coming musicians have to drink and usedrugs to be part of that community, or could they have made differentchoices?

•What do you think about the way Cherie's sexuality was portrayed in the movie? Was it realistic? How can teens explore their sexuality while staying safe?

•What was it about The Runaways' music that connected with audiences? What made it seem fresh and new?

•What did Joan and Cherie get out of the band? Out of music? What did Fowley get out of pushing the band members in such an insistent,abusive manner?

The Runaways DVD Review. 3 out 4 stars! ~ Rock story has pop

This hotwired saga of the prototypical 1970s riot grrrls makes a compelling argument about overlooked talent and under-appreciated influence (Bangles, Bikini Kill, etc.). The movie also, ahem, rocks.


Written and directed by Toronto’s Floria Sigismondi, it reveals how
three chords and an attitude not only made serious jam-kickers out of Runaways frontwomen Cherie Currie and Joan Jett, it also worked wonders on Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart, who play them in the movie.

It’s a shock to see sweet li’l Dakota rocking the mic as the face-painted, corset-clad lead vocalist Currie, and also following her well-documented (if also clichéd) descent into sex, drugs and rock-induced despair. Stewart applies her vampiric moodiness to rhythm guitarist Jett’s tough-girl persona.

Sigismondi bases her screenplay on Currie’s tell-all tome Neon Angel: The Cherie Currie Story, which inevitably, and regrettably, leads The Runaways into family melodrama about Currie’s drunken dad and jealous twin sister.

Before that, though, it’s a highly entertaining lesson in Rock Godhood 101. Ch-ch-ch-check it out.
