"Water for Elephants" (April 22)


"I Am Legend" director Francis Lawrence aims to capture the magic in Sara Gruen's best-seller about a traveling circus. Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson put on the show, while Richard ("Fisher King") LaGravenese wrote the script that convinced "Inglourious Basterds" discovery Christoph Waltz that this was a better way to go than David Cronenberg's next picture.

Genre: Period Drama/Love Story



Premise: (from IMDB) A veterinary student abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet.



You know, this is one of those scripts that shouldn’t have roped me in the way it did. It’s basically a love story. But the great thing about Elephants is that it’s a love story wrapped in a loony dangerous unpredictable package - the Bizarro World version of Titanic. Not to mention it has the best villain I’ve read all year hands down (can’t wait to see what Waltz does with it). You’re not going to read anything like this again for a long time.

However I did notice that almost all the scripts had at least one really memorable character, especially the Top 4. The biggest surprises for me were scripts like Water For Elephants, Untitled Chef Project, and Drive, all of which I was reluctant to pick up because the subject matter didn’t interest me. Yet once I opened them, the characters drew me in like a champagne sunset on a 70 degree July night. So work on those characters people. The concept will get your reader past the title page but once they’re there, it’s the characters that will keep them reading.

Robert Pattinson as the young man in a circus and Selena Gomez as magical princess with a crush. Finally there’s the very first images from the next two movies of the Hollywood stars. The releases, however, are still a long way away: Rob’s lover-story ‘Water for Elephants’ occurs in April 2011.

'Water for Elephants' UK Release Date - April 22, 2011

TotalFilm Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz have all been revealed in their period finery in a new shot from movie Water For Elephants.

Coming courtesy of Algonquin Books, the latest run of Sara Gruen’s novel features a new sleeve with snaps from the movie – which has given us our first sneaky glimpse at the stars of the film adap.



Most impressive is R-Pattz’s tamed mane, with not a hint of the Edward Cullens about him. Of course, Witherspoon’s going for gold with that wavy crop (there's definitely some Marilyn Monroe mixed in there), while Waltz is happy to sit and simmer with Oscar-winning gravitas.



Water For Elephants follows Pattz’s veterinary student, who looks after the animals of a travelling circus during the Great Depression. There, he meets Marlena (Witherspoon) and her twisted animated trainer husband August (Waltz).



I Am Legend helmer Francis Lawrence directs. The film opens on 22 April, 2011

Water for Elephants Release Dates for Italy & Poland

For some of our fans around the world you won't be waiting long for to see Water For Elephants.

According to an Italian press release, the release dates for Italy are just two weeks after the US release. The official release date in the US is April 15th, 2011 and two weeks later, April 29 it will be released in Italy. I am sure that makes some of you very happy. Poland will follow May 6, 2011.

If you have not had a chance to read Water for Elephants, now is a perfect time as ever. I myself have not had a chance to read, but I am working on other readings right now. It is on my to read list. I like to read all the books that Rob and Kristen turn into film projects. Stay tuned for more to come.......

Sara Gruen comments on Water for Elephants

Finally, switching topics briefly, I understand that filming on Water for Elephants (with Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz) has just wrapped. Are you happy with the result?




Very happy. The studio consulted me more than they contractually obligated to do, and the screenwriter did a brilliant job in compressing the novel into a two-hour film by combining a few characters and incidents in ways I couldn’t have begun to.
