As everyone slowly digs out from under their mountain of Christmas gifts (and for you folks on the East Coast, a mountain of snow), it’s time to give old 2010 a pat on the back and send her on her way as 2011 makes its way in. But before 2010 finds its comfy little spot in the history books, let’s take a look back at the year that was in movies.


First up are the ten highest grossing films of 2010. Most interesting about this list (to me, at least) is that in all likelihood not one of these films will win the Best Picture Oscar (except for Toy Story 3, which is still a long shot), and only two of them will probably end up with a Best Picture nomination. Does that mean the Academy is nominating the wrong films, or is just that quantity (in this case, box office dollars) does not always equal quality?

'Eclipse' Wins At Australian Kid Choice Awards

Twilight" film franchise has proven itself a favorite among young audience not only in the U.S. but also in Australia. Its third installment "The Twilight Saga's Eclipse" was chosen as Fave Movie at 2010 Australian Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, beating out the likes of "Shrek Forever After", "Toy Story 3" and "Avatar".



The film's couple Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, however, lost Fave Kiss in which they were nominated along with another "Twilight" star Taylor Lautner and his "Valentine's Day" co-star Taylor Swift. Getting the title for best smooch were Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth who shared screen in "The Last Song".

3. They got bored reading the book and decided to leave it behind in the hotel room rather than carrying it around with them (Obviously they’re not talking about Twilight here).

Eclipse major box office milestone →

Meanwhile, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse hit a major milestone.

The film reportedly has now earned more than $300 million in North America, although the figure has yet to be confirmed by studio Summit Entertainment.

Eclipse becomes the fourth release to cross the $300M threshold in 2010, joining Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland and Iron Man 2.

The movie is also closing in on $700 million worldwide.
